Senate Committee Holds Hearing on Status of Rail Network

October 21 the Senate Commerce, Science, & Transportation Committee held a hearing titled, “Passenger and Freight Rail: The Current Status of the Rail Network and the Track Ahead.” The hearing examined the passenger and freight rail networks’ current state, including the impacts of COVID-19 and legislative considerations for surface transportation reauthorization.

Two members of the Rail Customer Coalition (RCC), which IWLA participates in, testified at the hearing during a panel on the freight rail network. These witnesses were Frank Chirumbole on behalf of the American Chemistry Council and Kent Fountain of the National Cotton Council. The RCC members explained the rate and service problems rail customers continue to experience and provided potential solutions for consideration by the Committee.
