Paid Leave Program Approved by Ways and Means Committee

The House Ways and Means Committee approved a spending bill that would create a paid family and medical leave program offering up to 12 weeks of benefits starting in July 2023. The spending bill was advanced as part of the Democrats’ $3.5 trillion reconciliation package.

The program would replace lost worker wages on a sliding scale based on annual income and offer new reimbursement options for workers who take unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act. People who take at least four hours in a week of unpaid leave for medical or family reasons could seek reimbursement from the Treasury Department by filing an application with relevant information about their time off and their wages. The agency would also be charged with reimbursing employers who already offer qualified paid family and medical leave for a portion of those costs.

The spending proposal containing the paid family and medical leave program will next be considered before the House Committee on the Budget.
