Paid Family, Sick, and Medical Leave

Paid Family, Sick, and Medical Leave

May 18 the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions held a hearing on paid leave for working families. The COVID-19 pandemic brought renewed focus to the issue, and the hearing is another sign that the political momentum for some form of a national paid leave program continues to build in Congress.

The issue is a priority for the Biden administration. The President’s American Families Plan would create a comprehensive paid family and medical leave program that includes direct support to families. Biden proposed that the program be phased in over a 10-year period, guaranteeing 12 weeks of paid parental, family illness, personal illness, or safety-related leave by year 10. Workers would also receive three days of bereavement leave per year starting in year one.

IWLA is monitoring several family leave bills in Congress, including S.1195, the Healthy Families Act, and S. 248, the FAMILY Act.
