IWLA Comments on Young Driver Pilot Proposal

November 9 IWLA submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Transportation in support of a safety-first, commercial driver pilot program allowing 18 to 20 year-olds to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) in interstate commerce. The proposed pilot would institute many of the requirements outlined in the DRIVE-Safe Act, legislation with strong bipartisan support in the Senate and House of Representatives.

Steve DeHaan, IWLA's President and CEO, said in the comments, "The program as proposed would create a workforce of drivers with extensive training designed to provide experience, more training than is federally-mandated under any other program or regulation currently governing CMV drivers." Ultimately, he said, "IWLA believes the program has the potential to alleviate some of the strain placed on U.S. supply chains by the driver shortage, and that it will provide FMCSA with the concrete data the agency needs to make informed policy decisions."
