IWLA Calls on Governors to End Additional Unemployment Benefits

IWLA sent a letter to all 50 U.S. state governors on May 13, urging them to immediately repeal the $300 weekly supplemental unemployment benefit and other expanded jobless aid programs that are currently set to expire in September. IWLA members report that they are having a hard time filling positions and staffing their operations, in part due to the supplemental unemployment benefits.

Businesses across the country have echoed these concerns regarding the additional unemployment compensation hindering individuals’ willingness to return to work. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce announced that the $300 benefit results in approximately one in four recipients taking home more in unemployment than they earned working.

As of May 15, sixteen states (Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, Alaska, Arizona, and Tennessee) have said they will stop participating in all federal pandemic jobless aid in June or early July.
