COVID-19 Stimulus Negotiations Stall Ahead of Election Day

While Congressional leaders and White House officials have been engaged in a series of negotiations on a potential pandemic relief stimulus package in the weeks leading up to the election, it appears that a deal will fail to emerge before the November 3 election. Over the weekend, both House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows told media outlets that there was still a lack of agreement over funding.

The White House and House Democrats have recently moved closer to agreeing to the top-line figures for a stimulus deal. Still, at this point, it is unlikely that such a proposal will be advanced until the post-election lame-duck session of Congress at the earliest. Additionally, the election outcome is set to impact any stimulus deal’s prospects substantially, as the political calculus could potentially change what is and isn’t considered for inclusion in a final package.
