Texas Warehouse Pioneer Honored with
Jock Menzies IWLA Distinguished Service Award
March 30, 2015 (DES PLAINES, Ill.) –IWLA, the resource for warehouse logistics, awarded its Jock Menzies Distinguished Service & Leadership Award to the late president and CEO of Dallas-based Shippers Warehouse, Darby Strickland. The International Warehouse Logistics Association honored Strickland during the association’s annual business meeting March 10, 2015 in Savannah, Ga, part of the 2015 IWLA Convention & Expo.
The IWLA Jock Menzies Distinguished Service Award is one of the warehousing industry’s highest honors. It recognizes outstanding leadership and service to the warehouse logistics industry and to IWLA, the industry’s trade association.
IWLA honored Strickland because, as nominator and presenter Shippers President & CEO Ken Johnson explained, even though he passed away in 2009, his legacy lives on.
“Darby was way ahead of his time, a true innovator in business and warehousing and transportation,” Johnson says. His accomplishments were many: Strickland grew Shippers Warehouse from a 400,000-square-foot operation in 1970 to a 4 million-square-foot operation by 2005. “Darby provided momentum that has allowed Shippers Warehouse to become a true national provider of supply chain services with facilities from coast-to-coast.”
As the founding member of the Texas Warehouse Association, Strickland was known for tireless lobbying efforts in the legislature on behalf of client interest—tax issues, transportation deregulation, work conditions and more.
IWLA Chairman Rob Doyle, CWLP, echoed Johnson’s thoughts: “Darby represented what makes so many entrepreneurs successful: vision, the spirit to act, and leadership. He certainly brought this mindset to his volunteer efforts as well, including his active participation in IWLA.”
The award, first bestowed in 1996, was dedicated in 2014 to T. “Jock” Menzies III, co-founder and former president of the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN), who passed away in 2013.
Darby’s daughter Sheridan Dunlap and her husband, Mark, accepted the award on her fathers’ behalf.
