Ohio Supply-chain Leader André Thornton Joins IWLA Board of Directors
April 23, 2014 (DES PLAINES, Ill.) –Members of the International Warehouse Logistics Association (IWLA) recently elected André Thornton, president & CEO of Akron, Ohio-based ASW Global, LLC, to a three-year term on the IWLA Board of Directors. Thornton’s formal election was March 25 during the 2014 IWLA Convention & Expo in Phoenix, Ariz. Thornton chairs the IWLA Member Diversity Council.
Thornton acquired ASW Global, LLC, in January 2007 after ASW merged with the Cleveland, Ohio-based company GPI Procurement Services. As president & CEO, Thornton sets the direction of the company and directs operational aspects so that they follow the strategic plans and policies of the organization.
Thornton has 20 years of experience in entrepreneurial ventures. As one of the principals in Apple Partners, he led a highly successful restaurant management group that was sold to Applebee’s International. Thornton also founded a successful consulting and sports management company and continues to speak nationally on executive leadership, organizational change and diversity.
A professional baseball player for 21 years, Thornton played for the Chicago Cubs from 1973 to 1976 and spent ten seasons with the Cleveland Indians. Thornton received baseball’s top honor, the Roberto Clemente Award in 1979, which goes to the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and team contribution.
“We know that André will bring his experience driving strategic growth to IWLA, just as he has at the companies he’s led,” says IWLA President & CEO Steve DeHaan. “To remain successful, associations need dynamic leaders like André at the helm, pushing us to stay relevant and create value for our members.”
Thornton currently serves on boards for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland and Huntington Bank Akron/Canton Region. Other past leadership roles include board positions on the Greater Cleveland Partnership, the Greater Akron Chamber, as Kent State University President’s Ambassador and as a member/graduate of Leadership Cleveland.
He is married to the former Gail E. Jones and they have three sons: André Jr., 41; Jonathan David, 33; and Dean Michael, 30. The family resides in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
