Program Overview & Faculty

New/evolving legislation and regulations make doing business in California a moving target. IWLA California Chapter members have an advantage: Face-to-face meetings that provide insight into legislative activities and peer discussion about how to best handle these emerging issues. 

 

Our panel will discuss labor law issues surrounding independent contractors, employment practices and legal considerations for your workforce.  Additionally, legislative, regulatory and constitutional amendments updates will be provided including ACA 22 (10% Corporate Tax), SCA 6 (55% Majority), Indirect Source Rules and Gas Tax Repeal efforts.  There will also be a discussion surrounding CA/International Supply Chain 2018 considerations for job growth in the logistics/3pl sector and the race for our next California Governor.

10 a.m.            Introductions & Opening Remarks

                      - Mike Williams, Executive Director, CA Chapter IWLA

 

Mr. Williams will provide a Legislative, Federal and Regulatory Update including new developments with Indirect Source Rules, ACA 22, SCA 6, Moratorium on Natural Gas in LA County and several other critical issues.

 

10:15 a.m.         CA Supply Chain Considerations for 2018

                         - Bill Mongelluzzo - Senior Editor, JOC, IHS Maritime & Trade

 

Mr. Mongelluzzo will discuss current events including Port Congestion & Related CA and International Supply Chain Issues such as the proposed Trump Administration Tariffs, potential container tax initiatives, consequences and challenges for 2018 and beyond. 

 

Bill Mongelluzzo is Senior Editor, JOC, IHS, based in Long Beach, California.  He is responsible for coverage of the transpacific trades, West Coast labor issues, harbor trucking, West Coast ports and marine terminal productivity for JOC.com, The Journal of Commerce magazine and JOC Events.  Mongelluzzo joined The Journal of Commerce in 1980 as New Orleans correspondent.

He moved to Long Beach in 1985 and opened the Los Angeles Long bureau.  He served as maritime editor of The Journal of Commerce in New York in 1992-93 and returned to Southern California in August of 1993.  Mongelluzzo began his journalism career in 1972 as a reporter with the Times Picayune in New Orleans.  He is a native of Chicago and has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri and a master’s degree in history from the University of New Orleans.  Bill regularly speaks to industry groups on his areas of expertise.

                -Beth Schroeder-Partner, Raines Feldman LLP Law Firm

 

 

Mrs. Schroeder will bring you up to date with the new CA laws for 2018 that could put you out of business and address the relevant Labor Law and employment issues of the day.

Mrs. Schroeder is one of the leading employment law experts in California. She has over two decades of experience in representing employers in all aspects of employment and labor law, including the defense of employment-related lawsuits involving wrongful termination, harassment, discrimination, wage and hour issues and related claims. Her practice is known for conducting employee training classes, drafting employee handbooks and other personnel forms and documentation, preparing employment-related agreements and auditing wage and hour compliance. Beth received her B.A. from the University of Wisconsin, and her Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of California Los Angeles School of Law.

12:30 p.m.    Initiatives to provide jobs in logistics, CA Gas Tax Repeal and path to victory for our next Governor.

                      -Travis Allen Assembly Member 72nd District

 

 

Assemblymember Allen will discuss his run for CA Governor, CA Gas Tax Repeal efforts, vision of how he would improve the state and initiatives to provide jobs and future growth in logistics.

 

Travis Allen has represented California’s 72nd Assembly District since 2012. Before joining the Assembly, Travis owned a small business helping people as a financial planner. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Cal State Long Beach, and has also studied at Cal State Los Angeles. Travis is a long time resident of Huntington Beach, where he has lived and surfed for almost 20 years.
