Program Overview The purpose of IWLA’s 119th Annual Convention is to bring proven ideas and practices to our membership (1) to pull costs out of their own companies while improving operations and customer service; (2) to learn and apply new human resource programs that keep morale high and improve morale during rightsizing events; and (3) to identify and mine profit and growth opportunities.
The Convention program and breakout sessions offer hands-on instruction and provide knowledge from proven industry leaders and expert practitioners.
By attending the IWLA Annual Convention, you will be able to return with at least 3 money-saving and/or profit-making practices for your business, plus you will be able to exchange ideas with your peers on these topics to ensure you are at the top of your leadership ability.
Program Agenda Keynote Positive Psychology: How to Succeed & Be Happy at the Same Time Shawn Achor, CEO, Aspirant Achor, a Harvard University lecturer, has spent years investigating the science behind individual happiness and organizational success. His breakthroughs in positive psychology enhance individual engagement and cultivate a more positive, productive workplace. At the core of his research is the revolutionary finding that individual happiness and organizational success are inextricably linked. His work has received attention from The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post, and his clients include Fortune 500 companies like American Express, Credit Suisse, KPMG, Microsoft, and UBS.
Keynote Transportation: A Collaboration with Warehousing Tommy Hodges, President, Goggin Warehousing & ATA Chairman Hodges will speak to the current issues the impact trucking and its relationship to 3PL companies. He will discuss the supply chain from the viewpoint of the trucking industry and how 3PLs can improve their collaboration with the trucking industry for the increased profitability of both entities.
Keynote Survive & Prosper: Ideas that Work Moderator: Bill Mongelluzzo, West Coast editor, Journal of Commerce Panelists: Andrew Smith, President & COO, Kenco Logistic Services; Jim Eckler, President & CEO, SCI Group Panelists will present to the members ideas and practices that have enabled them to earn a profit in challenging times. Mongelluzzo will prompt each panelist to provide the circumstances and details on how the improvements came about and how they can be implemented by other 3PLs.
Keynote Sustainability is Free Dale Rogers, PhD, Director, Center for Logistics Management, University of Nevada Many companies believe that being environmentally conscious and socially responsible sacrifices economic performance. This belief is not true. For some companies, sustainability means environmental stewardship; for others, it means social responsibility. Rogers will discuss how supply chains and the companies that comprise them can achieve sustainability without reducing profitability. Rogers will discuss how the term sustainability is applied within their organizations, the relevance and economic import of sustainable supply chain management, how sustainable supply chains can be implemented, and future trends in sustainable supply chain management.
Recapture Your Cash Kevin Phillips, Attorney, Fisher Kanaris; John Horvath, Attorney, Horvath & Weaver Phillips and Horvath will examine the bankruptcy enforcement process as well as goods disposition, and discuss specific case examples and steps 3PLs must take to protect themselves when customers go bankrupt. Members should attend this session to ensure they take the steps required to protect their warehouse liens.
Food Storage & Safety John Wagner Jr., CLP, President & CEO, Wagner Industries; Pat O'Connor, President, Kent & O'Connor This session will explain what it takes to run a strong food products operation. Panelists will also discuss what types of products (eg, food, alcohol, cigarettes) and customers they courted to their warehouse facilities in tough times; and they will assess the opportunities, requirements, risks, and rewards. Recent federal regulations have changed what is and is not permissible under the strict supply chain process for food grade products. Attend this session and discover what you need to do to participate in these product lines.
Revenue & Productivity: Strategies & Solutions Moderator: Chip Scholz, President, Scholz & Associates Panelists: Michael Lopeman, Division VP, Artex Risk Solutions; Mark Richards, VP, Associated Warehouses; Patrick Sedlak, VP, Sedlak; Randy Stephenson, CLP, President, Camelot 3PL Software Panelists will focus on ideas that will help warehouses grow revenues and improve margins using different technology, employment, systems, and collections solutions. IWLA associate members who have uncovered how to increase sales and profits will present their programs for members’ consideration and discussion.
Economy & Efficiency: Strategies & Solutions Moderator: Rob Doyle, CLP, President, Amware Logistics Services Panelists: Lew Bricker, Partner, Smith Amundsen; Skip Pasternak, Aelux Lighting; Ken Ruehrdanz, Market Manager, Distribution & Warehousing Systems, Dematic; Sandy Vosk, President, ATS Panelists, representing providers, will identify real-world solutions to improve their bottom line through increased operational efficiencies, cost reduction, and cost elimination. IWLA associate members provide a significant cost savings and efficiency improvements for IWLA warehouse members. This panel will describe a series of profitable programs available to IWLA warehouse members.
Data Driven Management: How to Get, Validate & Act on the Facts that Will Grow Your Business in Tough Times Bill Keough, Principal, Supply Chain Visions In challenging economic times, it is more important than ever to differentiate yourself from your competition to win new business. Customers are always seeking better, faster, and cheaper solutions to their business problems. Keough will explore how warehousing organizations can out-step their competitors by identifying performance metrics that resonate most with potential customers. He will also explore how warehousing organizations can use these metrics to assemble a simple but highly effective performance scorecard that they can use with their customers to monitor and improve performance over time. The session will also address the information infrastructure needed to deliver the kind of accurate and timely performance data that attracts new customers.
Your Web Presence as a Marketing Tool Robert Jackson, Partner, Hochman Consultants; Bill Stankiewicz, VP & General Manager, Shippers Warehouse of Georgia Every day, customers go online to search for warehousing and logistics services. These online visitors to your website are a potential source of more sales leads. This session will cover: search engine optimization, paid placement, tracking and analyzing web traffic, and ways to improve your website. The session will also examine use of Web 2.0 for cost-effective guerilla marketing.
Keynote The 14th Annual Third Party Logistics Study, 2009 C. John Langley Jr., PhD, Director, Supply Chain Executive Programs, Georgia Tech Langley will review the 14th Annual Third Party Logistics Study, a study that has tracked key trends and views of customers who use 3PL services. For the first time, the 2009 study also offers perspectives from the 3PL provider sector itself.
Keynote State of the Industry/What's New at IWLA Panelists: Joel Anderson, President & CEO, IWLA; Jere Van Puffelen, CLP, President, Prism Team Services Van Puffelen and Anderson will update members on the issues that impact the industry and how IWLA has responded to each. This session will cover IWLA achievements and the tasks ahead that every 3PL needs to bring to their customers.

Keynote Government Affairs Panelists: Herb Shear, GENCO Supply Chain Solutions; Patrick O'Connor, President, Kent & O'Connor O’Connor, IWLA’s DC representative, will discuss current happenings in Washington, DC. He will examine a range of issues that serve as the 2009 agenda for IWLA’s Government Affairs, including the Employee Free Choice Act, legislation to regulate the railroads, as well as supply chain safety and security for food, pharmaceuticals, and hazardous materials and the potential effect on 3PLs. Shear will discuss GENCO's employee loyalty strategies.

Refund Policy IWLA will assess a $250 administrative fee per attendee for registration cancellations received in writing on or before February 1, 2010. Registration fees will not be refunded after this date. Substitutions will be accepted. No refunds will be given for no-shows.
Cancellation Policy Programs are subject to cancellation if enrollment is insufficient. In the unlikely event this program is cancelled, registration fees will be refunded. IWLA is not responsible for airfare, hotel, or other costs incurred by registrants in the event of program cancellation.

Attire Dress is business casual for educational sessions. Because meeting room temperatures vary, a sweater or jacket is recommended. For the Chairman’s Recognition banquet, a jacket and tie are recommended for men; cocktail attire is recommended for women. |
